Jumping Back in to Today I...

It's been too long since I've posted to this blog.  I'm in desperate need of seeing my accomplishments right now.  I've finally made the call to get an appointment for a therapist and they can't see me until the end of November.  So I need to work something out in the meantime.  Some of that will be at my main blog, Sanity's Overrated.  That's where I'll work out frustrations through my writing, having my distractions through daily memes and things like that.  It's where my heart will be poured and, hopefully, I'll get support.

But this blog is just as important.  It's important for me to look back at the things that I've accomplished, to be able to show myself that yes, I have been busy and no, I'm not a waste of space.  It makes it more real when you can see it.

So, getting back on the wagon, here's my list for Today I...

  • Watched Eric for Becca for a few hours
  • Washed and dried several loads of laundry.
  • Cleaned the countertops, the sink and the stove in the kitchen.
  • Cleaned out the microwave.
  • Handwashed several dishes
  • Put away the dishes in the dishwasher
  • Helped to reload the dishes in the dishwasher in the evening.
  • Went to the store with Becca and only spent about $3.
  • Rearranged the plastic containers so they fit without being a jumble
  • Took a shower (Sometimes it's the little things)
  • Made Chai Tea Mix from Pintrest so I can make myself a cup of Chai Tea in the mornings
  • Downloaded The Time Paradox, Artemis Fowl, Book Six by Eoin Colfer for listening while cleaning.

Not bad for today.  I am trying a new way of working on the big projects that need to get done in here.  So many nooks and crannies are stuffed with so many things, it's no wonder we don't remember what we have and what we don't.  But most of these things - like burrowing to the bottom of my coat closet - are daunting in and of themselves.  So rather than do all of a big project, I'm breaking it down into smaller tasks. And I'm going to do one smaller task in the room of the day.  (I work on the kitchen on Monday, dining room Tuesday, living room Wednesday, Bathrooms/Pantry on Thursday and Bedrooms on Friday.  That gives me the weekend to work on the big projects I want Rick's help with and/or work on my online stuff.)

For example, today was kitchen day.  I kept seeing so many things that needed to be gone through and reorganized.  But rather than work on all of those, I chose one - working on the cabinet that holds our plastic storage containers.  I had to force myself not to do more than that outside of my normal scope of kitchen cleaning, but I did it.  Next week, I'll attack something different.  Maybe the top of the fridge or the Washer/Dryer area.  I've got a week to think about it.

Now it's time for what I'm hoping to do tomorrow.  It's a guideline rather than a hard and fast list, but it's good to have plans.

Tomorrow, I:

  • Will clean the dining room, including vacuuming
  • Clean off the baker's rack and get rid of the dishes that the boys don't use anymore
  • Do today and tomorrow's blog posts.
  • Type up a bit more of my sheets for the home organization book
  • Do Tai Chi
  • Make dinner
  • Read
More may come up as the day unwinds, but for now, it's a good start.

Trying to get back into the swing of things

Well, vacation is over, we're home once again, and I'm trying to get life back to normal.  I'm still not all the way there, but I'm making steps in the right direction.  The last couple of days have been pretty productive and, since I've realized that writing about what I've accomplished helps me both feel good about myself and helps keep the motivation going, I'm bringing this blog back to the forefront.

So, here's my little bit of Go Me for the last couple of days.

Yesterday, I managed to pull together all the books that needed to go to the library and head there to drop them off.  I had a few things waiting for me to pick up as well, plus it had been close to a month since we'd been there because of our vacation.  I managed to find two books that had been among the missing and brought my overdue fines and fees back to a manageable level.  I also filled out the whole family's summer reading log and brought the printouts with me so we could get our summer reading swag.  Rich and I each got a library bag, while the boys' made out much better.  They each got a certificate and a "get in free" certificate for one of 5 places.  One of them is a local bowling alley and, since Teddy's been wanting to go bowling, that's the one we'll be using them for.  They also got a chance to pick out a new book for each of them.  Pete picked out an I Spy book while Teddy chose The Sword Thief, book 3 of the 39 Clues series.  Why he chose book 3 when we don't own 1 or 2 yet, I'm not sure.  But it's his and he's loving it.  I picked up my hold and the boys' chose a couple other books to check out, then we headed home.  I had other things on my list, but I didn't get to those.  The depression energy was sapping me.

I did, however, pull together my courage to call Amazon to get my Kindle replaced... again.  I'm having the same charger problem with it that I had before.  They'll be testing it to see if they can figure out why I'm having these problems. My new one is supposed to be here today but it hasn't shown up yet.  I'm getting antsy.

Today started with coffee.  I made myself a couple cups, drank it while checking out some stuff online and then decided that today needed to get started.  I got the kids up and helping and we got the living room cleaned up.  Yes, there are still things that need to be done - a bunch of things that need to be brought upstairs, the vacuuming that needs to be done.  But you can walk through the living room without breaking your neck. So I'm feeling good about that!  I also got dressed and went out to pick up the mail.  Again, go me!  (That's usually a tough thing for me to do.)

On my To Do list for the rest of today is:

  • Make my to do list for the weekend
  • Write out what I need to buy at Big Lots this weekend (school shopping for Teddy and they've got a 20% off your whole purchase deal going on)
  • Dishes in the dish washer
  • Start writing up my blog posts regarding my vacation
Rich is on his way home now too, so it's going to be a great Friday night.

This Weekend I...

It's been awhile since I've updated this blog, and I really need to get back to doing it.  It reminds me of the wonderful accomplishments I've made every day - particularly when I sometimes feel like I'm useless.

This weekend was one of the most productive weekends I've had in a long time, and I feel fantastic about it!

Friday, I:

  • Made a Lemon Cream pie for Rich's birthday
  • Packed for our trip to Dad's over the weekend
  • Started back in my Scratch Pad to keep on track
  • Drove to pick up Rich from work, then to Dad's.
Saturday, I:

  • Cleaned out the van - thoroughly.  All the trash out of the van, everything that didn't belong in a bag to go into the house when we got home.  Windows and interior wiped down. Carpet vacuumed, with the ones that would come out thrown into the washer to be washed.
  • Pulled the boys' car seats out, took them apart and washed the cloth parts, wiped down the plastic.
  • Screwed the cup holder in place on Pete's car seat.
  • Helped Dad fix the center console for the van.
  • Made ziti for dinner.
  • Washed dishes.

Sunday, I:

  • Put the car seats back together and installed them back where they belonged.
  • Changed the oil in the van (with Dad's help)
  • Helped Rich and Dad move the china hutch from one spot in the dining room to another.
  • Got everything packed to come back home.
  • Drove home

And so far today (though there's still more I'm planning for the list), I have:

  • Sorted the laundry.
  • Washed two loads of laundry (with many more to go)
  • Went to the grocery store with the boys
  • Dropped off the used oil and filter to be recycled

On my To-Do list for the rest of today is:

  • Wash more laundry
  • Fold and put away clean and dry laundry
  • Clean up the living room (a little)
  • Write out my lists for the things that need to be done for the trip at the end of the week
  • E-mail my MIL

Busy, yes.  But productive.  And very worth it.

Today I... April 1, 2012

Today I'm feeling great about myself.  I got a lot done and I'm making strides toward turning myself into the person that I want to be.

My husband and the boys had church in the morning, then Pokemon League in the afternoon (though my youngest, Pete, is too young to play, he loves to go and watch).  During the time they were at church, I went to Wal-Mart for cleaning supplies and a few other odds and ends that I needed.  I did not overspend, which is often a problem with me.  I have a tendency to impulse buy out the wazoo.  But I managed to keep a bit of self-control, and the only two impulse buys were a copy of Spiderman 3 that was in the $5 movie bin and Phineas and Ferb wall decals that were in the clearance aisle for $5.  Everything else was on my list.

From there, I filled the tank on my husband's car (since he had the van for toting the kids around) and went to Walgreens to pick up the one thing that I couldn't find at Wal-Mart - EZ Moves Furniture Moving System with Lifter Tool & 8 Slides.  I have a bad back and I need all the help I can get when it comes time to move furniture for cleaning.

I got home a little before Rich and the boys did, ate lunch at home with them (rather than going out, which is what usually happens on Sunday) and started cleaning the downstairs bathroom before they left for League.

And cleaning is where most of my rocking was today.  I'm a horrible housekeeper.... to the point that if I don't get things under control, we'll be looking for a new place when our lease runs out at the end of May.  So I've been trying to focus on getting everything to a point that it will be a) easy to maintain and b) good enough for the apartment complex to agree to renew our lease.  It's only been a few days, so I haven't gotten tons done.  But I've gotten a good start.  Today, I managed to:

  • Clean the counter tops in the bathroom, including the sink and the faucet
  • Clean the toilet
  • Go through the books and pieces of paper on the little table in the bathroom and remove clutter
  • Clean the mirror in the bathroom
  • Sweep the floor in the bathroom
  • Finish straightening up the living room
  • Move the entertainment center so I could clean behind it
  • Clean off the boys' TV trays, the coffee table and the entertainment center
  • Clean off the TV screen and the electronics around it
  • Vaccuum the whole living room and the entry way, including moving all but the couch, end tables and incredibly heavy bookcases out of the way.
I had planned on this weekend being both bathrooms and the pantry, but when I got the first bathroom finished, I really wanted to finish the living room instead.  I wanted to have two rooms that I could look at and say "This is finished!"  And really, the only things left in these two rooms are cleaning the walls in both, mopping in the bathroom, and cleaning the windows in the living room.  So I'm doing really good.

On the non-cleaning front, I managed to finish Countdown to Final Crisis, Vol 1, watch the end of season 1 and the beginning of season 2 of Supernatural while cleaning, make my A is for.... A to Z April Challenge Post for today, and start this blog.  I shared dinner with my family in the dining room, got things cleaned up from dinner, and am about ready to go to the living room to watch some Spiderman and His Amazing Friends with my boys.  There may be more accomplishments tonight, but right now, I'm happy with what I've gotten done so far.  If I just sit back and relax for the rest of the evening, life will be good.  Because I've done damn good today.  And tomorrow is the start of a new day.

Accomplish something every day of your life. - Walter Annenberg

Today I.... Introduction

I often have a difficult time remembering that I'm a pretty awesome person.  I forget the good things I do, the accomplishments I've made and the progress I've made.  I need to remember these things because it's so easy to be bogged down in the negative.  To this end, I've started this blog - Today I... in which I will talk about the positive things that I did each day.  Sometimes it will be in paragraph form.  Sometimes it will be a list.  Sometimes I'll have pictures to add to my text.  It will just be whatever strikes my fancy at the moment.

Yes, I probably could have added this to my every day blog, Sanity's Overrated.  But I wanted a place I could come to that is just for the positive, just for the accomplishments, just to remind me of what I can and do do without having to go through labels and the like.  A place of positive energy feeding back to me every time I read it.

I'm not sure if I'll be linking this over at SO.... or even really putting it out there at all.  But eventually, I may.  This isn't as much about tooting my own horn for the world to hear (though it is a little... otherwise I'd be doing this in a paper journal instead of on the internet for the world to see).  It's more about having a blog for me to look back on and remind myself that I'm a fantastic person and I can - and do - get a lot done in a day.
